PANTONE is giving a softer take on color as they released 2016’s Color of the Year — Rose Quartz and Serenity! This is the first time the renowned color authority declare two shades simultaneously as Color of the Year (in this case: Colors of the Year), and it has taken the Internet by storm!

Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

According to Wall Street Journal, Pantone chose these two shades together because they’re often seen together that they’ve become a natural pairing. Ms. Eiseman, exclusive director of Pantone’s Color Institute, said that they chose these two colors because they wanted compassion. The colors evoke feelings of relaxation, comfort, and calmness — things that we need in this chaotic world.

The pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. It appeals in all finishes and blends beautifully with mid-tones, like green and rich browns. Here are Pantone’s suggested color pairing for the two:
