Your next artsy Instagram post could just be your ticket to living the dream! Well that’s how it was for hand lettering and watercolor artist Pearl Choco. But don’t let her sweet, happy, and bright-colored works fool ya! They’ve gone through heaps of mistakes and tough remakes until they got to bask in all their beautiful glory! With art, you got to get your hands dirty to make that self-fulfilling masterpiece. And for Pearl getting into the paint and ink of it all was something almost automatic!
“I’ve loved the arts for as long as I can remember,” she shared during my interview with her. Yup! She was that kid who drew all over the walls, joined all of those art contests, and doodled non-stop back to back notebooks of whatever class subject. But just like everyone else, her dream life was just something she thought she’d only have when she was asleep.
Today she lives out her fantasy wide-awake! She’s up and about reading e-mails at seven in the morning and working full-time on her art until four in the afternoon. Her life is definitely way different now from how it was four years ago. That one artwork post on Instagram really kick-started her career. One slow and quiet day in the province led her to work with her hands, take a photo of it, and the rest is history. Snapperdoodles was born and that began the end of her banking career.
“I realized that time was ticking and there was no better time to start than NOW. I knew I had passion to create, live out of the box, and felt that I could do so much more outside. It was a blind leap of faith, jumping into the unknown. I was scared to be 21 and broke, but I had that urge to try and give my passion a chance.”
Now she has traded her corporate work set up with a more creative one! The days of black and white are gone, and now there’s much more space for pop of color. “My studio in the attic is my little place to make a mess,” Pearl shared. “I sit on my DIY chair, which I spray-painted on my own. It was supposed to be a cupcake chair, but now it just looks more like a melting candle!“ she kidded. The white walls behind her busy desk serve as her canvas for posting anything inspirational, from colorful postcards, to uplifting quotes, and to pretty cutouts! A rainbow of colored pens, brushes, and fine liners take over one entire section of the shelf her dad custom built for her and her craft supplies. And if that doesn’t boast color enough, her final works of art will prove otherwise! You’ll be surprised as to just about how many colorful quotes and hand crafted illustrations she’s made in the span of two and a half years.
Her motivation you might ask? It’s her favorite quote “your style is what makes it beautiful.” She follows no rules, no color scheme, and no design standards. For Pearl, she draws what she feels and writes what inspires her. And that is pretty much what makes her art unique. “My art is all about what makes me, me! There’s no such thing as ugly artwork. It’s your style and your design, so you should be proud of what your hands can create,” she shared to me.
“I believe being genuine, true to yourself, and to others is enough to earn people’s hearts, minds and eyes. There are many forms of art and many artists out there. I may just be one among many, but I am me. I guess that’s one thing that sets me apart. And the same goes for all of us. One way or another, we aren’t competing to be better than each other, rather artists are all after the same goal – and that is to spread the beauty of art. ”
So think about it, the next time you’re suddenly overcome by inspiration, let your hands take over! There is a kind of beauty that only our hands can create. Try it out! Who knows, your next #artstagram post could possibly be your ticket to a new hobby, or even a new career. You’ve heard Pearl’s story, it could be your story too!
