Shawna Huang, more known as Shawna X is a visual designer and artist currently living in New York City but is originally from Portland where she honed her skills. Her illustrations have a touch of slick, vibrant, almost seductive style that also carries an air of mystery much like Shawna herself. This artist has several big clients under her belt including Adobe, Nike, and the adult card game Cards Against Humanity, that made her an in-demand artist of her own.
Her designs transport you to a dream-like state which seems like it’s right out of a sci-fi romantic indie film. It makes use of vibrant neon colors and tropical aesthetics that blends into pop culture and vintage form. Creating bizarre-like images from daily things such as traffic lights has transformed her craft into its own form of visual branding. Unlike her current challenge of “figuring out how to maintain her voice in so much noise”, her work already embodies clarity through visual enticement that blocks out darkness and grit.
To Shawna, “making it as an artist” is a fluid concept. Process is what matters. She works on impulse and most of her ideas and execution are emotionally charged. Much like her mystic designs, she’s driven by deep human conditions and contrasts it with instinct. She believes that the creative industry is much more accepting (sometimes even more lucrative than before). Success isn’t only measured one way, and for creative artists like her, their path is not straightforward but rather it is a complicated one that they can work out as she believes. “A true creative is never satisfied with just the job. And if they are, they’re not doing it right.”
Her takeaway is to “work on different things at once” because by doing that, you will eventually find what you love and go on with that. And even if you don’t, you can always try doing something else.
