Brixton-United Food Trip

A whiff of freshly brewed coffee could be your greenlight to kickstarting your day, or maybe that unique spin on the classic sinigang is a definite lifesaver from those Monday blues. Either way, we know that there’s a foodie side to us that’s always got us dreaming of those memorable food escapades.

This ritual of search-dine-photograph may have been a recent introduction in the realm of social media (we’re looking at you, Instagram), but restaurants have solidified their stand by going for the complete eating experience that considers the 5 senses. From flavors that pack a punch, to the ambiance that the interiors create, restaurants have taken to heart the different ways to lure in the modern-day foodie.

Heima dishes out great design for the home with furniture pieces, decor, and other quirky items for your dose of eye candy. The Brixton-United area is home to Heima, and we also want to put the spotlight on our neighbors that add in their share of energy with their good food and eye-catching interiors.

Locavore” is a term that describes a diner who goes for food that’s locally grown, raised, and produced. It’s also the name behind the casual dining restaurant in Brixton street that offers a renewed perspective to local eats.

Locavore carries a line of local dishes, alongside drinks and bar chow for the after-hours. Their cuisine focuses on Filipino food with a twist. Keep those tastebuds tingling with the sizzling sinigang, the street food platter (skewered fishballs, kikiam, squidballs, etc. with the works), singkamas and manga, and the fried oyster sisig. Pay a visit at night, and down their bar chow with signature drinks and maybe a couple of desserts.

Chef Mikel Zaguirre shares with us that they wanted to develop a new feel to the Filipino restaurant by veering away from capiz shells, classic filipiniana, and everything else that points to the “typical”. This reflects with how they present the food – cooked differently and plated well. “We want it presented in a way that expats would appreciate”, Chef Mikel adds.

The interiors were designed by one of their major partners, Eric Matic, and the look opted for a hip and industrial feel, with the thematic use of concretes, woods, bamboo, blacks, and whites.

Visit Locavore if you want a unique take on Filipino food, with an ambiance that also defies the norm.

This nextdoor neighbor of Heima has in-house baristas that brew fresh cups of coffee to perk up your days. The same goes for its interiors that go for an industrial-inspired look that’s strong and straight to the point – just like how you’d want your next caffeine fix to be.

Classic Confections offers tons of sweet pastries and coffee, coupled with a few savory snacks. The bakery sticks to pastel colors, as with their couches and and wall art pieces, that match with their equally colorful saccharine treats. Their accent wall comes in a bright blue, to counter the soft hues of the pastries laid on top of the glass shelves. The light and dainty features are balanced out with the metallic luster of the chairs and tables, for a hint of the tough and icy cool.

Thinking of dropping by Classic Confections? we suggest taking a bite out of the cake Nono’s Chocolate Oblivion, the Double Chocolate Mousse, White Chocolate Cheesecake, and one of their quirky sugar cookies that come in many different designs with the same great taste.

Situated in United Street’s section with other gem food finds, Taco Vengo prides itself with their tacos, burritos, nachos, and other dishes that hail from Mexican cooking. They build on these old favorites and throw in a bit of creative flair with their new flavors that are truly theirs.

The restaurant may be small, but the the ingenuity behind the interiors is a reflection of the food as well. The shipping-container-turned-restaurant goes for the basics with its already unique foundation, decked with colorful christmas lights and a selection of beer bottles against the counter. The tables and chairs may go for the neutral palette, but they keep things fun with mismatched chairs of wood and metal. More tables are found right outside, alongside potted plants with big billowy leaves. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed drink out with friends, coupled with choice savory chow.

Have a taste of their Orange Chipotle Steak burrito, Cranberry Quesadilla, Tempura Shrimp Taco, Pork Cheek Confit Rice, Lime Soda, and the Chwaffle a la Mode (a cinnamon churro-waffle hybrid!).

A much deserved addition to the line of coffee shops in Kapitolyo has made its way in United Street, thanks to United Coffee. The warmth of coffee is matched with the cool interiors of clean and bright whites with the subway tiles and the light-colored wooden flooring. The streaks from the wood also add to the pattern of lines found from thin and sleek droplights, as well as the tables and chairs’ straight silhouettes. The wall art pieces also bring in the warm ambiance of coffee (as well as information on the espresso ratios!) and quaint little bookstores, thanks to the intimate library corner where you can pick out a book for you to read while sipping a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Give this cafe a shot with their cookies, Apple Crumble Cheesecake, US Slow-Roasted Beef Sandwich, Baked Three-Cheese Spaghetti Bolognese, and of course from their selection of coffee!

Diner on 16th is another one conveniently tucked in the same building as the rest of these United Street resto features, and they’re packed with American-style comfort food and pop culture reinvented with the sharp color palette of blacks, reds, and whites. The shiny glitz and glamour from the pop icons and brands put up on the walls also point to the reflective tiles and the bright spotlights and the big window fronts that usher in lots of sunlight. The typography scribbled onto the chalkboard walls add in that personalized element that balances out the media-saturated icons, with words that remind you of just how food manages to bring everyone closer.

Outside, the translucent roofing welcomes in the bright sunlight. This area’s also great at night, where you’re welcome to join in on a game of beer pong with their beer pong table that’s all set up!

We tried out the Waffle Florentine and the Buttermilk Chicken and Waffles, and we think it’s worth going back for! Some of their other dishes on our list: Bourbon Barbecue Beef Kabob, Beer-battered Chicken and Waffles, Cheddar Jalapeno Burger, Parmesan-crusted Mash Potatoes, and their Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes.

Surf’s up for Crunchy Crab’s selection of seafood eats and beach-themed interiors that instantly transports you to that seaside getaway. What to find: the washed-out wooden tables and chairs, the surfing board propped up in a corner, framed photographs of beach trips by the owners themselves, and a mural with the words “Eat, Drink, Beach, Repeat”. A sunny summer trip is easily made with Crunchy Crab’s good food and relaxed space. The writings on their glass doors and the chalkboard menu builds on this casual theme, along with the with the images and drawings of their specialties. We’re eyeing their tabletops made creative with those seafood-inspired outlines too.

The owners came from diverse backgrounds from business owners, engineers, to basketball players. Their common love for the beach, chill music, and fresh seafood is was got them getting together to build Crunchy Crab. The interiors were a definite giveaway, but we also see this seaside inspiration through the refreshing notes of mango, lemon, and cilantro in their dishes. Pooling all these together creates that laid back beach vibe they were gunning for, which also complements the Kapitolyo set-up that’s a great go-to place for foodies.

We gave their soft shell burger and house blend iced tea a shot, and we were more than happy to give them 2 thumbs up! We’re already setting another visit to try out their other specialties such as their Three-Fish pasta, Shrimp BLT burger, and SanFo Fish and Chips, to be topped off with their  Calamansi cupcake.

Various USA-based restos that feature the sushi-burrito have been making rounds online, but luckily, we won’t have to look further than Nori’s own take on this fusion-style meal. Take a visit, and while you inhale that sushi-burrito accompanied with potato chips and miso soup, you’ll be treated with a view of the interiors that reflect the unique combinations behind their menu.

The seats’ deep green hues complement the light and airy notes of green scattered around the resto with the hanging potted plants and vines running all the way to the second floor. The metal tables and the black metal seats go for a more dark and rigid tone, as with the walls and lighting fixtures that offer spontaneity with being covered up in newspapers. Very creative, to go with the mural that’s hard to miss.

With the interiors’ varied sources of elements and inspiration, it can easily be representative of Nori’s sushi burrito x yakitori picks. Check out their Osaka Beef with Cheese and Truffle Rice, Shrimp Crab Aligue, and Saikoro Steak Yakitori. They’ve got a set of cold noodles, lazy sushis (rice bowls), yakitoris, and sushi-burritos for you to try as well.
