Kat Zulueta and Paolo Melgarejo approached Design by Heima with a vision in their mind. Luxe. Neutral. Country. Hotel-like. Streamline. Those are just some of the things they wanted for their first home as a couple. Considering that it is going to be Kat’s first home with her fiancé, Paolo, they were both really excited and nervous to see the reveal of their first home for the first time. Who wouldn’t be?
To bring their dream home to life, Kat decided to go to Design by Heima to build their home from start to finish. I was able to hear from one of the designers behind the project: Karizza Uy, the other designers being, Rossy Rojales, Isabela Blanco, and Chino Roces. I learned about their design process which lasted for three months, and in those months, the team was able to turn a bare unit into a perfect space for the couple to live in.
In the first stages of the process, designers initiate a briefing to get to know the clients better. Karizza got to know the lifestyle of Kat & Paolo, their daily routine, the places they like travelling to, and more, in order to come up with a design and layout that best fits for them.
Design pegs for the unit
Kat says, “At first, I wanted an eclectic design for the unit, but Paolo didn’t like it because it was too strong for him so I went to Heima and gave (different) pegs.”. Through briefing and series of brainstorming with Kat and Paolo, the designers were able to think of a concept that would match what they wanted. Paolo especially wanted a neutral and timeless look for their home that even after ten years, it’s still going look nice. Kat dreamed of a Sophie Paterson feel for her unit.
The concept for the design was a Coastal Luxe style which Karizza describes to be perfect for the couple because they wanted an elegant yet natural, neutral, streamline, and hotel-like feel. It also rooted from the couple’s fondness of going to the beach together. This kind of style features elements with natural wood finishes, classic furniture, and a neutral color palette to name a few.
The furniture in their unit is mostly customised by Heima. Kat further agrees that having customised furniture is a good idea because it becomes more in line with the design, making everything else in sync with one another. Taking elements from a classic style: they produced oversize furniture and tufted backrest with nail tacts to make the space elegant.
They chose gmelina wood, a natural light wood, which matches the brass finish with the metal legs, for all the custom furniture. The designers also used polyester fabric in taupe shades because the clients wanted a neutral and hotel feel.
Karizza adds, “The drop light for the kitchen was expensive but we really emphasized that it’ll be worth it for the design. It’s made of glass which shows an elegant look and a repainted body, the chains attached to the wall to match the concept. We used brass for all the metal so it looks better because everything looks coordinated.”
Upon seeing Kat and Paolo’s home for the first time, Kat mentions, “It exceed my expectations, I already knew it was going to be nice but so much different when you see it in person. It was nicer than what I was expecting.” She gushed saying that the feeling of seeing her first home with Paolo was like experiencing their engagement all over again.
When asked which part of the room Kat especially likes, she says, “Actually lahat favourite ko. I would say this one but maganda rin to, maganda rin yan. I think I love everything because theres a specific theme for all but they harmoniously blend and match well for the over all look. If you take out one thing out, it won’t look complete so everything just blended well perfectly.” She also felt that design of the space fit her and Paolo’s personality well.
Kat mentioned that the whole process was really fun and even though there were delays, everything came together in the end. The design team was keen on listening even if here were various changes in the process. She noted, “During latter parts of the process, I appreciated the designers even more because you can really see that the design is really different when you get an interior designer as compared to if you do it alone.”
Finally, when asked how Karizza felt after the turnover and seeing the clients happy, she said: “There are no words for it. Every time we have a turnover, we just always want to see them (clients) happy. You won’t think of the long hours of work day in and day out on the project and everything just becomes worth it, as long as they are happy with the design.”
