8 Standout Pieces In Manila Fame April 2017: Furniture

It’s that time of the year again! Designers and design enthusiasts alike gathered together last weekend to visit the bi-annual Manila FAME held in World Trade Center in Pasay City. Considered as one of the premier design and lifestyle events, it showcased the overflowing innovation, craftsmanship, and artisanship of local designers. This year, indigenous materials and unique ways to manipulate these were highlighted in the exhibit.  

The second of our series is furniture design. Listed in no particular order, here are the 8 furniture pieces which made our heads turn and our eyes brighten.

1. Idesenyo Chair and Table

The furniture pieces above are great examples of refreshing takes on innovation and sustainability. Made from purely recycled materials, the pieces stand out from other exhibited items. Natures Legacy Eximport, Inc. is a company that prides themselves in using recycled materials, winning numerous awards in the industry. The pieces pictured above are specifically made out of recycled paper, recycled wood, and one of the company’s innovations, Marmorcast® .

2. Sorsogon Table

Sometimes the best results come from the minds of the youth. In this case, this beautiful side table was made by Leticia Garcia Robles, a student of Musashino Art University in Japan. The unexpected shape and material caught the eyes of numerous passers by. The table is made of tempered glass top with the base in metal wrapped in woven bariw. The organic form, combined with the materials make a very contemporary and striking piece.

3. Hana Easy Chair

The Hana Easy Chair easily pops out from the Casa Garcia booth. The interesting form and contemporary blue color makes it a piece that is worthy of a second look. This piece, just like all A Garcia pieces can be used for both indoor and outdoor. The lounge chair is made of polypropylene and powder coated metal frame.

4. Dangelo Collection

The new collection from Coastpacific designed by Froilan Barete was impressive. Made of polyethylene and powder coated aluminum frame, the piece looked good enough to be indoor furniture. The entire set was made to be used for outdoor, using sunbrella fabric for its cushions. Teak wood was used for the coffee table, ready for any type of weather.

5. Monica Daybed

As a first time exhibitor in Manila Fame, Indahouse surprised many with their beautiful wooden pieces. Daybed pictured above uses a beautiful gemelina wood frame. Owner and designer Anna Liza Gualdaquever started making furniture as a hobby. All the pieces exhibited exuded a quaint and rustic feel, which makes it easy to picture these items in your own home. Indahouse is situated in Davao City.

6. Schema Dining Table

The Schema Dining Table was a great example of how seamless Filipino inspired designs can be fused with contemporary furniture pieces. The dining table looked sturdy, yet airy. Designed by Celia Jiao, the piece is made of galvanized iron with powder coated finish. The piece looked high end, and also very Filipino.

7. Espalda Side Chair

Another hit from Schema was the Espalda Side Chair designed by Antonio “Budji” Layug. The furniture were reminiscent of traditional Filipino style cane weaving done in the past. The frame, done in metal, modernizes the traditional look.

8. Chanalli Display Table

There is a certain charm from handmade products which is not seen in more commercialized stores. Chanalli is a factory located in Pampanga , which specializes in handmade woodworks done with Mango wood. Owner and designer is Dr. Ayeo Alexander. The top of the table pictured above was a piece simply put together from old scrap wood found from an old wire roll. The legs were also carved some spare wood parts to form a beautiful centerpiece to hold their home decor pieces.
